Achievements

  1. Centre for Gender Equity and Empowerment has been awarded 1000 GBP by Association of Commonwealth Universities for project entitled; “Technological Response to Sex and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) at Kenyatta University: The Anti-Violence Android Mobile App”.
  2. Kenyatta University was accepted as one of the High Impact Universities under the IMPACT 10X10X10 HeForShe Champion by UN Women and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Paul K. Wainaina designated as a Lead Champion.
  3. Under the five-year IMPACT 10x10x10 programme, Kenyatta University has made three commitments: (1) Attain 45% representation of female academic staff, administrative staff and senior leadership positions by 2022; (2) Ensure that gender is mainstreamed into existing structures and platforms; and (3) Reinvigorate existing structures to prevent report, predict and deal with gender-based violence in all campuses of Kenyatta University.
  4. The university management has continued to respond to the needs of the girl-child by improving the university admission criteria by lowering one point for the qualification requirements to increase the enrollment of girls in the University. This has enabled more girls to be enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) based Programmes in the University.
  5. The University has committed itself to achieving a minimum of 45% appointment of male and female staff as a way of ensuring gender parity. At the present time, the ratio is 63% male compared to 37% female for both academic and administrative staff. Kenyatta University has, therefore, exceeded the constitutional requirement of 30% representation of either gender in the public and private sector.
  6. The Center has also conducted many Dissemination Seminars on the Gender Policy and the Gender Based Violence and Sexual Harassment Policy to both Academic, Non-teaching staff and students. This is an on-going process.
  7. The Center continues to conduct Training of Trainers (ToTs) workshops for a selected number of students to equip them with skills to address issues containing gender. The ToTs disseminate the two policies to other students and also enhance the gender awareness among the student community.
  8. The Center participates in marking the Sixteen Days of Activism to end Gender Based Violence in November every year.
  9. The Center, in collaboration with Kenyatta University Students Association (KUSA), Kenyatta University Gender Action Movement (KUGAM) organizes a Gender Week that ends with the celebration of the International Women’s Day on 8th March, of every year, as well as other key days.
