DIPLOMA IN COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES
Entry Requirements
There will be three categories of students:
i. Self-sponsored programme whose entry requirement will be Mean grade of C (plain) at KCSE or equivalent with at least C (plain) in English or Kiswahili and at least C- or equivalent in any three of the following subjects: Geography, History and Government, OR one (1) Principal and one (1) subsidiary at KACE or equivalent in the relevant subjects OR Mean grade of C- (Minus) at KCSE or equivalent with a Certificate of at least Credit pass in a relevant field of study from a recognized institution.
ii. The direct entry students will be required to have at least a Certificate in Communication and Mass Media or in Environmental Journalism offered by Kenyatta University and should have scored an aggregate mark of 60% and above.
iii. Holders of a Certificate in Journalism and/or Mass Communication and proven experience / interest will be considered.
Course Duration and Structure
i. The common regulations for all diploma programmes of Kenyatta University shall apply.
ii. The diploma duration will be two (2) academic years of study. In the first academic year of study, the learner will take ten (10) units, five units per semester. In the second academic year of study, the learner will take six (6) units in the first semester and two units in the second semester (Field attachment or research project).
iii. The programme consists of eighteen (18) units. In order to qualify for the award of the diploma, the candidate must pass all of these eighteen (18) units. A unit shall be defined as a series of either practical or lectures that last 35 hours.
Examination
The final written examinations will constitute 70% of the total marks while the continuous assessment tests (CATS) and assignments will constitute 30%. Pass mark for all units shall be 40%. Research projects and field attachments shall be assessed out of 100%.
